How do you save humanity when the only thing that's real is you?

How do you save humanity when the only thing that's real is you?

What I Thought After Seeing It: I liked the idea of this movie…I also like Bruce Willis.  Those were my two primary reasons for selecting this movie over some of the others that I could have seen.

I actually did enjoy this movie, however not quite as much as I had hoped I would.  I kind of expected to walk out of the theater saying “Wow, that movie was one of the best I’ve seen in a while”, but I didn’t.  It was kind of just “another movie” so to speak.  The story line was a bit predictable as well.

One thing that is great about this movie though, is its “conversation starter-ability”.  My girlfriend and I went to see this movie together, and on the way home we got into a bit of an argument over whether or not something like the premise of this movie would be a good idea or not (and whether or not you should or shouldn’t choose to “live as a surrogate”).

Here you’ll find a more comprehensive review of the movie Surrogates.

How it Performed at the Box Office Opening Weekend:  The weekend this movie opened was actually a “not so eventful” weekend for any movie.  It ended up opening at the number 2 spot behind “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”, bringing in about $15 million.  This was not nearly what was expected for this movie.  It was supposed to be a late in the season blockbuster, but opened more like a movie designed to say “Hey, it is the end of the summer movie season.”

Release Date (everywhere):  September 25th, 2009

Starring:  Bruce Willis & Radha Mitchell

The Invention of Lying – Starring Ricky Gervais

In a world where everyone can only tell the truth... ...this guy can lie.

In a world where everyone can only tell the truth... ...this guy can lie.

How it Performed at the Box Office Opening Weekend: This movie opened to a dismal $7.4 million.  The critics are pretty much all giving the same review to this movie, that being that it is in fact clever in many ways, and does produce some laughs, but still remains to be too much of a romantic comedy that doesn’t quite deliver on some of what the trailer “promises”.  Here you’ll find a full review.

Release Date (everywhere): October 2nd, 2009

Their Plot Synopsis: A comedy set in a world where no one has ever lied, until a writer seizes the opportunity for personal gain.

Starring: Ricky Gervais & Jennifer Garner

My Thoughts: While it is an extremely clever idea, I’ve got the feeling that this movie is just going to turn out to be yet another romantic comedy.  I don’t know if I can keep myself away from seeing it though (even with my intense dislike for romantic comedies) simply because of the idea of watching a movie where nobody holds back.  I’m sure that about half way through the movie Jennifer Garner will discover she has been lied to and blow off Ricky…then Ricky will proceed to get her back, ending in typical romantic comedy fashion.

Be Your Own Hero

Be Your Own Hero

How it Performed at the Box Office Opening Weekend: Unfortunately, this movie didn’t get the amount of viewers that it should have.  This movie has gotten excellent reviews from just about all that saw it.  It is an intelligent movie…but it opened against a not so intelligent (but still very good) Zombieland.  All in all, opening weekend for this movie took in just over $4.5 million dollars.  Don’t count this movie out though…  More information about Whip It.

Release Date (everywhere): October 2nd, 2009

Their Plot Synopsis: In Bodeen, Texas, an indie-rock loving misfit finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin.

My Thoughts: I think this movie is actually going to be pretty good.  Ellen Page is one of my favorite actress’ and I think she’ll perform just as well in this movie and will not be disappointing.  I don’t think this movie is going to open so well at the box office it’s opening weekend though…but we’ll see.  Some are saying that Drew Barrymore and Ellen page together could make for some “movie magic”

Movie Tagline - This Place is So Dead

Movie Tagline - This Place is So Dead

How it Performed at the Box Office Opening Weekend: Apparently, this movie got Woody his largest ever film release in North America…good for Woody!  This movie came out swinging taking over the top spot at the box office its opening weekend.  It opened to the tune of $25 million its opening weekend, meaning it has already recouped its budget for the ENTIRE movie (which was roughly $23 million).  WARNING: Serious Profits Ahead!!

Release Date (everywhere): October 2nd 2009

Their Plot Synopsis: In the horror comedy Zombieland focuses on two men who have found a way to survive a world overrun by zombies. Columbus is a big wuss — but when you’re afraid of being eaten by zombies, fear can keep you alive.

My Thoughts: From the looks of the trailer, this is going to be a great movie.  Could even end up as a cult classic.  This movie may pull me up out of my computer chair and get me in the theater.
